Numeracy
At Montmorency Primary School, we take a whole-school approach to creating and delivering a comprehensive Numeracy program aimed at nurturing a love for Mathematics. Our focus is on developing the numeracy skills, understandings and strategies of all students. We are committed to fostering a positive Mathematical Mindset for both students and teachers, actively promoting and incorporating this mindset into our daily learning experiences.
In the Victorian Curriculum, Mathematics is structured around six content strands and four proficiency strands.
The content strands outline the key areas of learning and are as follows:
- Number
- Algebra
- Measurement
- Space
- Statistics
- Probability
The proficiency strands describe the ways in which the content is explored and developed. These strands are integrated into the content descriptions and include:
- Understanding
- Fluency
- Problem Solving
- Reasoning
Our daily Mathematics lessons are designed around the ‘whole-part-whole’ teaching model, incorporating a gradual release of responsibility. Each lesson begins with a daily review to reinforce and promote fluency of previously learned concepts. This is followed by explicit instruction of new ideas and understandings. Students then have the opportunity to practise these new skills through assigned activities. Throughout the lesson, they engage in focused teaching groups, working independently or with partners and participate in roving conferences with the teacher. The lesson concludes with a reflection on learning and a chance to share effective strategies.
As a school, we continuously refine our teaching practices based on student data and the latest research on best practices in Mathematics. This approach allows us to maintain consistency across the school while also addressing the unique learning needs of each student.
