Learning Enrichment
VHAP
The Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) is designed to challenge and extend high-ability students in Years 5-8 across all Victorian State Schools, providing a supportive learning environment. The program offers ten-week online courses in Mathematics and English for both primary and secondary students. Participants engage in live WebEx classes with their teachers and have the flexibility to explore course materials on VSV Online outside of class time. The VHAP classroom fosters a dynamic learning experience, where students have the opportunity to:
- Express and explore their ideas freely
- Take ownership of their learning and decisions
- Be inspired and challenged by their peers
- Build confidence in their abilities and choices
- Feel a sense of excitement and engagement with their learning
In the VHAP English course, students explore the connections between reality and fiction, drawing insights from both the real world and the fictional worlds they encounter. The course encourages students to build confidence and embrace academic challenges.
In the VHAP Mathematics course, the focus is on understanding the ‘why’ behind mathematical concepts, not just the ‘what’. Students engage deeply with the philosophical aspects of mathematics, questioning and exploring the foundational ideas behind the subject.
Maths Olympiad
Maths Olympiad is an inter-school competition that has been specifically designed to stimulate and challenge high potential and high achieving students in Years 5 and 6. It provides an opportunity for students from around Australia and New Zealand to compete as part of a team while striving for individual excellence. It is a prestigious and highly regarded competition that has been running in Australia since 1987.
ICAS
The International Competitions and Assessment for Schools or ICAS Assessments are online assessments conducted by UNSW Global, designed to recognise and reward academic excellence. ICAS recognises and rewards student achievement in the areas of English, Maths, Science, Spelling, Writing and Digital Technologies. The series of tests are designed to match and test skills that are learned in the school classroom.
